2018 album. Hawkwind have collaborated with songwriter and conductor Mike Batt to recreate a selection of Hawkwind songs with an extra, orchestral ingredient. Eric Clapton guests on one track. Also available on CD.
Hawkwind invited Mike Batt (creator of the musical Wombles) to help create arrangements for some of their most celebrated songs performed by the current line-up of Dave Brock, Richard Chadwick, Mr Dibs, Haz Wheaton and Magnus Martin. Tracks such as “Quark, Strangeness and Charm”, “We Took The Wrong Step Years Ago” and “Psychic Power” are re-rooted acoustically, then embellished with a strength and majesty only Hawkwind can produce. “The Watcher” features trademark guitar licks from very special guest Eric Clapton.
Batt first met Dave Brock at the US embassy in London while both were applying for VISAs, and Hawkwind recently announced autumn 2018 shows at London Palladium with Batt conducting and scoring. With the first Palladium show sold out, this paved the way for a full nationwide tour. Hawkwind originally intended to record an acoustic album, however due to their blossoming relationship they invited Batt to create arrangements for some of their most celebrated songs. Batt says: “Dave was delightfully free-spirited and generous to me, using a small ensemble of additional musicians and giving me a pretty free hand with the arrangements.” Dave Brock says: “Reinventing these familiar songs has been an interesting experience… we hope you like them.”
